Smart Peace Roundtable Discuss Myanmar’s Conflict and Reforms in Civil Governance Sector

With the number of violent conflicts increasing, there is a worldwide need to respond more effectively. The Smart Peace global initiative convened its first virtual roundtable of policy, practice and research experts, hosted by Chatham House. Since 2018, the four-year program combines the expertise of consortium members to address the challenges of building peace in some of the world’s most fragile states–including the Central African Republic, Nigeria, and Myanmar.
Focusing on Myanmar, The Asia Foundation’s Director of Conflict and Fragility Adam Burke and Program Advisor Tabea Pauli shared conflict analysis to support understanding of Myanmar’s recent conflicts and reforms needed in the civil governance sector. The roundtable was joined by UK government officials, representatives from embassies, and other international organizations working on peacebuilding.
The roundtable premiered a short film “Smart Peace: collaborating for adaptive peacebuilding,” highlighting the consortium’s work in three contexts and features Adam Burke discussing the Foundation’s work in Myanmar.
The Smart Peace consortium, coordinated by Conciliation Resources, consists of The Asia Foundation, The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, International Crisis Group, The Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich, Behavioral Insights Team and Chatham House.
