Barnett Baron was formerly Executive Vice President of The Asia Foundation.
Barnett Baron joined The Asia Foundation in 1993. He was vice president and regional director for South and Southeast Asia from 1993 to 1994, when he became executive vice president. Prior to joining the Foundation he was vice president for international programs at Save the Children (U.S.) from 1990 to 1993.
Dr. Baron was assistant professor of political science at Columbia University and Barnard College from 1970 to 1972. During the first five years of his 16 years with the Population Council, he managed a program to establish university-based population studies programs in five African countries. From 1982 through 1988 he was senior representative of the Population Council for East and South Asia, responsible for programs in 15 countries, based in Bangkok, Thailand. Subsequently, Dr. Baron was a visiting scholar at the East Asian Institute at Columbia University in New York where he organized and directed the first comparative study of contemporary philanthropy in seven Asian countries.
Dr. Baron was widely published in the fields of Asian and international philanthropy. He was founding chairman of the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium (1994). He also served on the International Committee of the Council on Foundations; the steering committee of the Council’s United States International Grantmakers project; the advisory board of Meaningful Assets: The Citigroup Private Bank Global Philanthropy Partnership; and on the editorial boards of several international academic journals.
Education: B.A. in government and history from New York University; M.A. in international relations; and Ph.D. in political science from Yale University.
